Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R (Jim) Hardison is a welcome breath of fresh air for those who love the horror genre. Meet Ron and Bing Slaughter, twin brothers who couldn’t be less alike. The only things the two teenage boys share interest in are their band and their dislike of Mr. Brom, the History teacher at their high school. They’re best friends with Prathamesh “Meat” Kimitri, the son of the local weather forecaster, and Kaitlyn Krimpsen, a young woman whose love of showers is known to make her late to everything.
The teens are set to go to Meat’s cabin to study for the SATs that are coming the very next morning when they are all embroiled in a supernatural event that changes how they see their world. As they try to solve the mystery of the Golfer’s Association, Meat and Kaitlyn are taken hostage. How that happens is best left to the reader to discover. Laugh at all the incredibly ridiculous puns that Mr. Hardison generously sprinkles throughout the novel and possibly shake in terror when Demon Freaks reaches its climax.
I loved the whole of this book, the second I have read by Mr. Hardison. I really loved the lore of the book, especially when it all comes together and some massive secrets are revealed. Secrets even the reader doesn’t see coming. Demon Freaks is filled with the same kind of humor as that of his other work, Jim Hardison paints a vivid world that one can easily identify in their own lives.
I personally did not find Demon Freaks very scary at all, but that may be due in part to the humor that I have come to love being poured into this book. The world is well constructed, the monsters so aptly described that they would inspire fear in anyone not already numb to horror novels or distracted by puns. I can honestly say that I have never read a book quite like this one, putting it on par with some of Stephen King’s newer works such as Cell.
I rate Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R (Jim) Hardison four out of four stars. Truly, this book belongs on the shelves of the young adults and fans of the kind of faux-horror that fills the pages of this book. I look forward to the next novel that comes out from Mr. Hardison and can only hope it is a sequel to either this or Fish Wielder!
