I love poetry with streaks of mystery and I think I just felt at home. Bleeding Gull: Look, Feel, Fly by Raed Anis Al-Jishi is a collection of short poems regarding different aspects of life. He pieces emotions in short poems with some in relation to the Arabic culture. The book has 88 poems, some as short as three lines. The topics are random including love, creation, religion, depression, sanity, cancer, autism, death and many others.

The author uses imagery to bring emotions to life. The flow of emotions is fluid even with the changing of themes from one poem to another. I felt like the author wanted us to look into the aspects of life, feel the emotions, then we can rise up and fly. The artistic execution of the poetry induces feelings and sticks long-lasting emotions in a reader.

I loved this book exceedingly. The author's selection of different life topics makes the book ideal for everyone. The metaphorical aspect of the poems can be hard to comprehend but they are also short enough to give time to sink in. The titles were really captivating and I couldn't help trying to guess what the poem will be about. The poems can induce empathy in a reader when they read about cancer, autism, and other sensitive topics.

The style of his writing is distinct and speaks to a reader due to the sincerity of the emotions. The message comes out so powerful even without rhyme. I loved most the poem Prisoner. The poem is simple and relates to many. The relatable aspect of the poems makes them feel so real. The changing of themes is uplifting and reassuring. I didn't really understand all the poems but that is not important. The few that spoke to me were so powerful and fun to read again and again.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The reasons are all that I've talked about and there is just one word to describe Raed's work. Spectacular. I think some people can say it is not fair if they do not understand the poems due to their hidden meanings. That won't be a reason I'll reduce my ratings because that's the author's style of writing. He brings out emotions perfectly that way. For this reason, I think this book will be ideal for a poetry lover who doesn't mind mystery and unraveling metaphors. This was a great read.
