I enjoy crime novels and can't wait to add this to my collection. I also like that the story has entwining themes to the story. Great review.

Thank you for your review! I like the idea of a mid-life female lead in a detective novel. It's also nice to know that Shane is a flawed character. It makes the writing more exciting when the main character seems more real.

I am a fan of mystery/crime novels and you mentioned that this book is different from others in the genre, so I'm excited to check this out. I love when a story takes you somewhere you least expected. The characters also sound great. Great review!

Thanks for the review, this sounds like a great book with very human characters. I was expecting to see 4 stars but there are some things to note before reading.

I’m intrigued by the reviewers recollection of this book. However there was an added word in one of the sentences that I think the reviewer missed but should have caught with a simple rereading.

Your argument for the rating is very concise and worded well. The book sounded very interesting, but when I sampled it it seemed to start slow. I'm glad you clarified that the pace picks up later. I love characters that you question their choices, it is more realistic and I find more enjoyment while reading. Thank you for the review. :)

Ooo. Sounds like a good read. I'm not sure if I will enjoy it though if it had errors in it. I will try to look pass it.

Great review! I’m not into crime mysteries and it sounds a little to drawn out for me, but I’m sure fans of the genre will enjoy. Thanks for your review.

I thought similarly about the start of the book and felt quite neutral about the story and towards the characters. The sample contains information...lots of information. It is no doubt important for the facts to be stated clearly in the case of a disappearance, mirroring the process followed by the Homicide Detective, but there is very little engagement with the characters and I found I had very little investment in who they were and what happened to them. The review indicates that this is a good, surprising mystery, but this is wasted if it is not read to the end. Readers need to feel strongly toward a main character, or about solving the mystery, in order to either continue reading or purchase the book.

I am a huge fan of police procedural shows like Law and Order and I also love detective novels. I'm really curious as to what the surprise ending is. It's a shame about the lack of thrill in the beginning but it's good to know that the story picks up later. Great review!

I love books that get you invested in them and questioning the main character. Your review was wonderful and makes me want to read the book that much more.

Thank you for the review. I myself have read only a sample of the book, and I completely agree with you that the writing style, while simple and easy to read, gets a bit boring and does not generate that much excitement that is expected from a crime thriller, at least in the beginning. The investigation procedures are much detailed and seems meticulously organised, but I could not find the spark that makes me love thrillers. But since your review suggests that the novel picks up the pace later and also mentions that some new developments arise to further meddle up the investigation, I think I would like to know 'what happened to Flynn', after all! By the way, what you say about the novel dealing with 'racism' and 'sexism' are hinted at from the very first chapter, and I think reading the story from Shane's viewpoint will be real exciting!
