I don't know anything about Cossack history so this looks like an interesting read. I've always been interested in historical fiction books during WWII so I think I'll like this one.

I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction, but I like that the author has chosen a topic that isn't overly used in historical fiction. However, I think the writing style and time hopping would be confusing to me. I'm going to pass on this one. Thanks for the insightful review!

I get the sense that I would be stressed reading this book, but I'm willing to give it a shot anyway.

I love this review an the effort made by the reviewer. She has carefully documented the highlights and negatives that she found in the book, and explained why this was a good choice in the genre.
It is good that the author chose to explain the aftermath of war, and its effects on ordinary people.
Great job!

I read a lot of historical fiction, and a bunch that I've read have been set during World War II. It always amazes me how there's such a huge variety on books and stories about WW2. This book features a part of that era I know very little about, so that alone makes me want to take a look!

I love that the past couple BOTD's have been history pieces that aren't focused on well known moments in history, can't wait to check this on out.

Important to stay in touch with history, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be a good audience for this just now.

Sounds like great novel about WWll. Based on actual history and not some interpretation which is always bonus. Story line also seems interesting.

This sounds like a fantastic read, errors aside. I took a class on WWII and don't recall much about the Cossacks. Wartime history can be a hard pill to swallow, even when fictional, because it's most likely very likely to parallel someone's real story. Thank you for a great review.

They do always say the Cossacks are tough! But there were so many casualties of the Nazis and the Red Army, so it was tragic that those families got sandwiched in between. A well-written book like this is always somehow a joy to read, even if the events are harrowing.

Great review! It sounds like a really moving book, especially if you're into war stories. However, I don't think I'll read this book, as I personally don't like reading about wars and such.

I particularly enjoy the fact that this book seems to be retrieving a piece of history that would otherwise get lost in the shadow of time. Your review is all-embracing and makes me want to read a story which is both realistic and emotionally touching.

I like your review and I have only heard of the Cossack people once. I think that many times history can overlook people or events because they run counter to the narrative that we have been told. I think that stories such as these add to our knowledge of certain time periods rather than take away from that time. I was immediately drawn to the cover of the book and how it looks like a passport.

Although Cossack is not among my typical reading genre, I have definitely enjoyed reading the sample that was provided.

Ronald McQueen has done a wonderful job of capturing the reader's imagination and attention.
