Superhighway by Alex Fayman is the first installment of the Superhighway science fiction series. Interestingly, the main character, Alex fine shares the same first name with the Author, Alex Fayman. The story is about Alex fine and his encounters with the internet. As an eighteen year old, he is prone to make reckless decisions which for me seemed normal for a person in that age group. But the consequences that trickle down as a result of those decisions are consequences that he must face. In the course of his interactions with the internet, he is able to access information on the identities of criminals, accounts, government secrets and other information that build up his character.
It is noticeable that Alex’s experience growing up as a foster child influences most of the decisions he makes in the virtual world. Material wealth was not something he had access to as a foster child and when he gets an opportunity to access wealth, he literally ‘eats life with a big spoon’ travelling all over the world. The idea of being able to travel with the kind of ease Alex did, is something I found Likeable. That could probably be because I like to travel too. Though a science fiction genre and even in the midst of all the technology, the writer is able to include aspects of romance. Experiencing love as a teenager turns out to be a hot potato in the throat of Alex fine. The father to the girl he falls in love with doesn’t make things easy for him.
The idea of blending technology, super-human abilities, love, crime and travel was very creative of the author. The story line flowed smoothly and character development was uniform. The use of a series to tell the story of Alex is a good idea in my opinion. Through this, character development doesn’t seem rushed because other aspects of the characters will be brought out in subsequent installments of the series. In fact I’m looking forward to finding out if Alex as the main character outgrows his hormonal teenage stage of life and learns to make adult decisions that impact his life positively.
On the overall, Superhighway is a page turner science fiction tactfully written to give the reader an experience that will them with no option but to consider reading subsequent installments of the Superhighway series. The writer went the extra mile to ensure the book was properly edited. The use of supportive characters to develop the main character was also achieved. Though there were technical terms, there were not too distractive for me.
I rate Superhighway 4 out of 4 stars and recommend it to anybody who enjoys the science fiction genres. Because the main character is a teenager whose character is wanting, he may not be the best example for a teenager living in the real world. For that reason, I do not recommend Superhighway to teenagers as they could easily pick the habits of the teenager in the book. The most suitable audience would be a mature audience because they would be able to distinguish between what is right and wrong but then again that would depend on a person’s level of maturity.
