And then consider a case where guns are banned altogether, and this situation wouldn't happen in the first place, provided checks are stringent and illegal buying of firearms is minimal.
I'm not saying owning/knowing how to use a gun would *never* be able to protect your loved ones or that it's always going to be disadvantageous, because there are definitely circumstances in which it can help (think rabid animals you really can't prevent from attacking, but I digress), but chances are that if you have a gun, so does the person who breaks into your house. And then it may or may not become a cycle of gun-owning and one-upmanship because everyone has guns.
Or, if you want to argue it another way, peace is definitely a better option to me than violence.
