What happens when you mix a singing dagger, identical twin brothers, golfing warlocks with a Saint Nicholas doppelgänger as their leader, and chick commandos (who have ‘colorful’ names), with an evil that is strong enough to wake far away priests from their slumber? You get J.R.R.R. Harrison’s Demon Freaks!
Twin brothers Bing and Ron Slaughter, along with their school and band mates Meat and Kaitlyn, find themselves amidst a combination of some serious and absurd (in a good way) situations while they are supposed to be studying for their SATs. Who then better to whisk them into this bizarre series of events than their history teacher, a man we promptly learn is also into some sort of witchy possession stuff himself, as he interrupts the band’s practice in a spooky sorcerer kind of way. From there we go on a wildly sensational roller coaster ride of zany, spine tingling events, all of which happen in the span of little more than a day! In addition to their own fears, the characters face possession, witchcraft, a couple of fashion needy caddies and even death by sacrifice, ultimately climaxing with an entirely unforeseen fast food chain conspiracy with their parents at the helm!
Many parts of the book are ‘laugh out loud’ worthy, but overall the story has a remarkable amount of suspense and horror. As the engaging characters clash with hordes of terrifying teethheads and communicate with each other via psychic party lines, the crises continue to evolve. The final chapters are especially tense and dramatic. As the heroes and heroines struggle to stifle the demon summoned forth by the evil Golfers’ Association while simultaneously attempting to rescue their friends from being sacrificed, the action and anticipation had me white-knuckling my chair arm!
My only negative thought about Demon Freaks is that I didn’t feel as though I truly ‘knew’ the main characters until well into the story. It seemed as though they were immediately thrust into the drama shortly after an abbreviated introduction. This for me was a very slight fault, and if given the freedom of rating in percentages would only have reduced my rating to 3.9/4.
This was an enjoyable book with an imaginative storyline. Blurring genre boundaries, this could be deemed a young adult horror showered with comedy and a touch of paranormal fantasy. As this is one of the most randomly marvelous books I have ever read, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars.
