Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon

Sarah is a young girl on a journey. Taking a hike through a national forest with her estranged grandfather is not something she'd consider much of a good time, it certainly wasn't what she'd envisioned for herself it certainly is something she - and those around her- would remember for the rest of their life. Accompanying her on this journey is her grandfather, Tom, his friend, William, and William's daughter, Myra.

Strong Heart is a historical fiction novel that I found myself enjoying. The characters are interesting, the plot well thought out and well written. Despite how some of the passages drag on, I consider it a novel worth reading. This novel, I believe, would appeal greatly to a young adult audience interested in historical fiction with a focus in bonding.

The story would've been more enjoyable if the author focused more on the cultural aspects of the story. I also found the story was extremely fast paced in some parts and slow in others. The author could have done some more planning with the plot in order to make it an even more interesting novel to read. So far, the only thing I found to be a sensitive subject is about the debate on North American culture's origins.

I particularly found myself enjoying the strength of character displayed by the young female character as well as determination she displays. The characters are interesting and fleshed out, with motives clear. I appreciate the effort the author went through with setting the scene while keeping in coherent and easy to follow. I find the side characters to fit into the story without dragging away focus or boring the reader. The slight elements of conflict that appeared gave the story more depth and appeal. This will appeal to anyone who is interested in nature, family bonding and culture, especially younger readers.

Charlie Sheldon had done a great job with this book, especially with implementing different elements. Sheldon ended the book in such a way that there could be a follow up, or leaving the reader to interpret their own end. I am looking forward to reading a sequel and see what happens further in the Olympic peninsula with Sarah and Tom.

After careful consideration, I have decided to give this a novel a 4 out of 4 rating as I enjoyed it greatly and have so far noticed few mistakes. For any young audience with an interest in historical fiction with hints of adventure, this is the book to read.

Thank you for your insights. I also read, reviewed and loved the book like you did. You're very much right as volume 2 (and 3) of the series is already on its way.
