I have also often wondered on the validity of the great divide between oral/primitive and literate/civilized communities. Ruth Finnegan's book seems to be tackling a lot of interesting questions concerning the various forms of human communication, including the present IT revolution. Thanks for your review!

I agree with you that this book would appeal to a certain crowd. From what I gathered from the sample it seemed to be written for those who are possibly in college.

The writing seemed rather dry to me. My inner voice read it in a monotone, emotionless rhythm. Most probably because I really wasn't interested in what I was reading.

Yet, after reading how much you enjoyed it, if I came across this work at a time where I was curious about the relationship between information technology, and oral and written language... I might have had a completely different reaction to what I read.

Your review did make it sound more interesting than the Introduction would have me believe it will be. But not enough to purchase it.

I am definitely more intrigued to read this after reading your review. I'm very interested in history and literature so I would probably like this. I like that she presents it simply. Thanks for your insight!

The fact that the author explored the topic in two different countries, Fiji and Nigeria, makes the book informative. I also like reading about the influence of the recent IT revolution to different societies. I will add it to my to-read list.

Good review. Not really into technical books but this one is a must read. Literacy is important and so much IT is used that people are forgetting how to do things on their own.

Honestly, the characters and plot development was good. Literature wise it was pretty nice, but some more drama would have been well. All in all, great book!

Thank you for a thorough review. Unforntuely, I did not enjoy this book. It read to much like a text book. I was hopeful as I did like the topic of how communication has changed due to technology. This book is definitely for a specific reader or a college classroom. On the positive side the author was very well informed and her information was sound.

'Official Review: Literacy and orality, by Ruth Finnegan', acts as a vast introduction to the book, for the readers! This is 'food for thought' for us and prepares us to read the book!

IT will definitely cause a change and a revolution. The revolution caused is very alarming and moving at a very fast pace. The world is now caught up in IT and we can't resist that. Thanks for the review.

Thanksyou for Allowing me to reply:
Although this book was a informative book.
I must say it didnot give me the information i was hoping for.
I have been reading up on information as to Literacy and Orality of technology in the future to come.
And yes technoligy will become more advanced as time goes on without us older generations fade but nothing under the sun is new.
As technolgy advances the cycle of past events always return in some sort of fashion.
The seen is temporary and the unforseen is eternal.

As far as i am concerned, the impact that IT,popular participation, econmic development in this modern age has moved mankind in a direction which would either serve him for the better or worse
The book titled Literacy and Orality written by Mrs. Ruth rinnegan is so mindblowing and delighful to read because it opens up the mind and sheds more light on two cultural practices which are literacy and orality. This two practices have distinct characteristics and is peculiar to people all over the world.I might not be a literary student but im definitely interested in the affairs and ideas conerning it.
