Heaven and Earth

Heaven and Earth’ has successfully painted a possible intra-galactic relationship between two worlds; the much advanced world of Treretum, an alien planet 8.6 light years from earth; Nivla (a citizen of the alien planet of Treretum) is the main hero of the alien planet who also goes ahead in helping four citizens in their patriotic quest of salvaging planet Earth’s deteriorating situation; the worst part is that not many Earthlings are aware of the dilemma their world has been immersed into, as the government uses the ignorance of its people to efficiently exploit them. On the part of planet Earth, we see these four awesome patriotic American citizens face the odds to create a better world: Mr. Gavilan, Ms. Olga, Dr. William and Mr. Sam; these four, coupled in their pairs respectively, get on course to enlighten the grey area of the prevailing cause of the epidemic of Cancer: the heavy concentration of Cadmium in our food chain – it is the drive of their curiosity and tenacity that granted them access to the futuristic mind of Nivla whose planet had passed through the stage earth is in currently – exploitation by leaders; it’s also quite interesting that these four were of great aid to Nivla and the catastrophic invasion of an obstinate enemy in his planet.

Apart from the friendship between Gavilan and Olga evolving into a strong affinity of romance, another awesome feature of this novel is it’s efficient ability to double up as a health book: exposing many things you and I might be very well oblivious to, in regard to our health and those around us.

The first thing I love about the book, is the mind of the author and his unconventional style of passing across a message we do not get to hear every other day; the message of the detrimental effect of Cadmium in our food products, and how it is causing a huge loss in our society. It’s though painful getting to know that the author in the person of Arturo Riojas, has his mother suffering from cancer (as stated in the novel), but it’s noteworthy that he could turn this into positive energy to alert the world of how we might be putting the lives of many at stake.

He could have written it in a purely scientific tone, at least we see him do that at the end of each chapter, but for him to have made up a very interesting story from this, I am so baffled.

The second thing that captivated my liking is the storyline; the main message of Cadmium poisoning had to be passed across; which according to the author was the main purpose of the novel, crafting out such a storyline as we see in ‘Heaven and Earth’ is in itself very interesting, the author blended; Romance with suspense to get his message across, that definitely deserves a thumbs up. The story of Treretum through its evolution was well told, the invasion of their enemy and the opportunists who used Treretum’s dilemma to their advantage added colour to this story.

My third liking consist of those things that may seem fictional, but might actually be real; well, the case of an alien isn’t proven, so that might be classed as fictional, but I for one believe that there is life outside of our solar system just like we have here on earth and I know many people believe it too, my interest lies in the fact that the author could satisfy and strengthen my belief with this story, another ‘fictional’ part that got me so captivated is the aliens’ ability to move through space (time actually) faster than humans, a technique of creating a straight line between a wrinkled space in the ‘fabric’, thereby creating a shortcut; this also reinforced my quest of understanding the relative nature of time.

My fourth favorite are the facts I learnt about Cadmium of course.

I can’t really point out something I didn’t like in this book, though something that got me confused was the sequence of arrangement of the proceedings in the alien world at the earlier part of the book, but at the end of the day, this mode of arrangement only fueled my reading, that’s the only thing that was kind of odd for me.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars; I was thinking of rating it 3 out of 4 for the reason that it cannot appeal to the major population, especially from the part of the world I come from, but I changed my mind because I felt that popular opinion shouldn’t deprive it of the perfect enlightenment it would endow on those who seek for social liberation; another reason why it deserves a 4/4 is this: maybe I wasn’t observant enough though, but notwithstanding, I only saw one grammatical mistake, and that was towards the end; that’s just superb. For the reason stated, I couldn’t have rated it lower. Apart from those seeking for social liberation, those who are obsessed with the wonders of the universe and quantum science would immensely enjoy this book.
