The Lord of the Rings.
I love the Harry Potter books, but I still haven't seen all movies. I saw the first five, they were fun, but not all that great.

I absolutely love the Harry Potter books but feel that, having watched the films that they did not live up to the scenes that had played out in my head while I was reading. For mythical books like that I find it hard to identify with the films. Everyone's perceptions of the characters, monsters, scenes etc are surely different whereas films of a more real nature are easier to reconcile with my own perceptions. That's not to say that the special effects and acting etc in the Harry Potter films aren't excellent, just not what I expected.

That said, I enjoy most films and do not normally join in with the "i've read the book, so I automatically hate the film" discussions. You know the ones I mean. It sure is good to see that not all readers partake in these thoughts!

Do series count? The Game of Thrones is great, and very close to the books. Lord of the Rings is, of course, always fantastic. Harry Potter and Twilight have made reading almost fashionable again. But Stephen King writes a very good movie Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption are right up there - and when will they film the Dark Tower series? And Dickens and Shakespeare were GREAT movie script writers - even if you can't face the books. Has anyone read, and then watched, Pillars of the Earth? And what about Bryce Courtney? I would love to see a movie of The Four Fires. And what about the Hornblower books, the Flashman books, and closer to today, Sue Grafton's Alphabet series? All would make really good movies. And who has read Carl Hiaasen? His books are so crazy. And, of course, Terry Pratchett is the greatest - I can't wait to see Samuel Vimes, Moist, Spike, Corporal Nobbs, the Sweeper, and the rest brought to life. My daughter and I have a constant mental game casting those movies!

They did make a Hornblower movie back in the 50's, it starred Gregory Peck. It was an excellent movie, followed the book fairly close. It seems they made a TV version of it also some years ago.

Gone with the Wind, Atonement, The English patient. I had high hopes for the movie version of Cold Mountain after reading the book, but :( it did not live up to the book. Boo hiss.

My favorite book and movie is "Lord of the Rings" and "A beautiful mind". Both are my favorite.

One that was a good adaptation into a movie was Nelson Algren's Man With the Golden Arm. Frank Sinatra's performance as a drug addict was great, very realistic. Also Elmer Bernstein's soundtrack music was super cool.

It's a toss up between Donnie Brascoe and No Country for Old Men. The former probably just nudges it because it was such a fascinating read knowing it was a true account into the mob world.

Another just jumped in my head - Memoirs of a Geisha. Brilliantly written, became so immersed into the atmosphere of the book. And the film makers made it almost exactly as I had pictured it.

I just mentioned this on another thread but one that comes to mind is The Incredible Shrinking Man made in 1957, it was really good and faithful to the book. The special effects were very good for that era and Grant Williams performance as The Shrinking Man was very realistic. I highly reccomend it. Another good movie made by the same producers was Invasion USA, it came out about 1951 nor so, about the Russians nuking the US. The special effects were terrible, but the storyline was great. I saw it in a theatre with two other kids when it first came out and it scared the crap out of us. Walking home at night from the theatre we were talking about building a bomb shelter in the vacent lot next to our house, and getting machine guns and hand grenades, all kinds of weapons to fight the Russians. I found the movie a while back in a hock shop on VHS and I found it still kind of disturbing, even with the terrible special effects. It made me feel that we are vulnerable to attacks from terrorists, or other countries and that is not pleasant to think about.

I first read The Deerhunter many years ago (when I was a young lad) and thought it was an amazing book, and when I saw the film I was expecting to be let down because the book was so good. Well, I thought the film was brilliant and things you picture in your mind whilst reading were spot on in the film.........both great. Christopher Walken played a great role and really shot him to stardom.

One of my all time favourite movies ... and I never knew it was based on a book. Another one for the TBR list
