Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon begins with friends, Tom, William, and Myra, packing for a hiking trip to make sure the grave of Tom’s grandfather, Bob-Bob, is secure before Buckhorn starts mining for erbium in the Olympic National Forest. There are several loud knocks on the door when Tom opens it, he meets his granddaughter for the first time. Tom suspects, Sarah, age 13 will be trouble, the fact that she doesn’t like where he lives nor his cooking, was his first clue. A debate, among the friends to postpone the trip or take Sarah with them, resulted in permitting her to join them. Sarah, annoyed with their decision, complains about camping out and carrying a pack. Thinking the trip would be more interesting for Sarah, Myra tells her “the Olympic Peninsula is a land of magic, history, and legend.” Tom is teasing Sarah about a bear she believed she saw, and she becomes angry with him and rushes off. Myra goes in search of her, but she has disappeared. Sarah, missing for eight days, returns to camp, with cuts and scratches on her and covered in mud, she tells a story of what she saw and experienced while trapped in a hole under a broken rock.
The author gives incredible detail about the characters which caused them to come to life. Descriptions of the canoe on the ocean and being hit by waves were exhilarating and when hiking the trails in the forest the reader feels the hiker’s exhaustion. The reader can escape into the world of Strong Heart, the people in a canoe, and their adventures. The storyline was captivating from beginning to end.
I adored all the names Sarah gave the people in the canoe. Here are a few of the names, Woman Who Weeps a Lot and Woman Who Weeps a Lot More. Pretty Face, Thrower, and Fat Hair. Her journey with them was fascinating, tragic, and terrifying.
Sarah had two quotes that I considered adorable: “A hike? Seriously? Seriously, this is child abuse.” and “So, this grandparent kidnapping grandkids is, what, an Olsen family rule?”
This book puts an immense twist on the classics: “The Wizard of Oz”, written by L. Frank Baum, and “Alice in Wonderland”, written by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, under the pseudonym, Lewis Carroll.
Strong Heart a well written and an exciting book to read received 4 out of 4 stars from me. I found one error, although when with the people in the canoe, there might have been a mistake or two, but I believed it was just the language of the time.
