The story seems to be intense and truthful. All those war traumatic experiences must have left a deep scar on the young boy. I like your descriptions of the boy`s behaviour and hopes and his growth. Great review, thank you!

Reading books that depict ordinary people caught up in unforeseen events like a war erupting in a place that had been home is heart-wrenching. It brings home the reality of war as everything changes. The reviewer tells that the main character grows up amidst all this fighting for his life. It seems like a great book. I like historical fiction a lot.

Not usually a fan of historical books but since becoming a member here I'm finding myself drawn to them because of the great reviews. I'm definitely going to check this one out! Great review! I will do my best to overlook the editing mishaps.

I like historical fiction, kamel story is a good one,it tells story of a young French boy during world war 1,what he went through before he become a man,and how he survived when German troops killed his parent,I think is a nice book to read despite that there's error in it.

Nice review.

It is now on Kindle, so I hope some of the editing issues have been fixed. Historical fiction is not a go-to for me, but you make it sound like a good fast paced read. However, even after sampling, I'm not sure which war we are talking about. I guess I will find out.

This sounds quite different from the typical coming-of-age story. Your descriptive review has me intrigued!

This definitely sounds like an emotional read. I'm already feeling for Kamel and how he must've dealt with such a horrible adversity. I'm sure once the grammar and edits are cleared up the book will be much better. Sounds like quite a story. Great review!

I too am a fan of historical fiction. It's too bad about the grammatical errors but it seems they did not keep you from appreciating the complexity and depth of the story. Thank you for a very good review that most definitely makes me want to read this book.

Shame about the grammatical errors in what sounds like a rivetting and emotional historical fiction. Stories set during the World Wars are particularly powerful. Nice review!

Typically I like historical fiction, but something in this one just turns me off. And to tell the truth, I am not rightly sure what exactly makes that's so, but I wager considerate part of it is that book seems to be autobiography in disguise.

Thank you for the interesting review. I am a fan of historical fiction novels, but I don't feel that this book will be a good fit for me. The storyline doesn't pique my interest. I guess the story of a young French boy looking to live his own life only to become embroiled in World War 1 just doesn't engage me at this point. I'll read a few pages and see what I think.

From fry pan to fire. Haha . I like this book already. Leaving home to a supposed safe haven but then it's more than hell there. Wow from the review I suppose Kamel has great surviving tactics. I would read this book to see how long Kamel and his grandpa can hang on. Thanks for the review.

I am shamelessly sentimental; I imagine needing several boxes of tissue for this book. The sample didn't prepare me for the slaughter of Kamel's family. War is devastating. It robs its victims of so many things: innocence, freedom and a home the most precious of them.
