The motivation to do something differs greatly from one person to another. There is, however, one thing that is insatiable. This is the hunger for fame and recognition. This hunger can never be satisfied. In his book, The Prize, Geoffrey M. Cooper illustrates the extent one can go in order to gain fame.

Professor Eric Prescott has won several prestigious awards that he wanted. His ultimate goal is winning the Nobel Prize. Eric works for the Institute for Advanced Neuroscience. Dr. Pamela Weller, Pam, works at Harvard’s Langmere Institute for Neurological Disease. Pam had developed a new approach to look for a drug using a cell culture while still at Michigan University. Eric, on the other hand, is working on developing a new drug to treat Alzheimer’s Disease using genetic mice. Eric came up with these genetic mice that develop Alzheimer’s. The two scientists are both working on developing a new drug to treat Alzheimer’s. While Pam is driven by the desire to see that the disease is cured hence saving lives, Eric is motivated by the desire to win the Nobel Prize.

Pam has a group of scientists working in her lab. One of them is Holly Singer. Pam had entered into an agreement with Holly that George would be the first author in the paper they would be publishing. While testing the chemical compounds from the Langmere Chemical Laboratory, Holly discovers the compound that has the ability to treat Alzheimer’s. This compound can also reverse the effects of Alzheimer's in the early stage. It is at this point that the main conflict begins developing.

The book is full of unexpected twists and turns. The story is very interesting. The plot is well developed. The most amazing thing about this book is that it is memorable. Every character is serving a specific role in the story. The third person point of view has been used. This has led to the ability to clearly bring out the characteristics of the characters. The language used is very simple and anyone reading this book will enjoy it.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. In my opinion, this book can be read by anyone who enjoys medical thrillers. The book addresses issues that are real and are faced in the society. The lessons to be drawn are very valuable. One thing that I got is that our main goal in life should not be to win awards or to acquire wealth. One should always strive to solve a problem and these rewards will come too. Reading this book will leave the reader evaluating the reason for undertaking any course in life. I believe this is the reason everyone should read this book.
