In today’s world, technology is everywhere. We cannot live without it, unfortunately. Nothing is wrong with that. It just has this uncanny ability to make everything easier, from socializing to shopping and even banking. I can watch anything I want and buy anything with a few simple clicks. Today, everyone is becoming more and more reliant on technology. Technology also gives us some really interesting ideas, as is seen in this novel.
The book centers around an incredibly brilliant young man called Alex Fine. Alex grew up in an orphanage. He was always different. He never really fit in with people his own age and chooses to keep to himself. When several attempts at foster care fails, Alex is resigned to staying at the orphanage. Over time, he develops a close relationship with the matron. She was like the mother he never knew. She encourages him to read and learn new things. There are extremely high expectations for his future from her and the teachers at his school. Alex himself expected to attend one of the top colleges in the country. His life changes when the orphanage obtains several new computers. He was always drawn to computers but had little opportunities to use one. The first time he uses one of those computers, Alex discovers that he has a rare ability. He is a bit shocked when he realizes what he could do but recovers quickly. Soon, he is using his abilities freely. It is almost as if he were addicted to his newfound talents. As he moves in and out of the web, he visits new places and makes new friends. His gift also allows him to finally understand who he is, where he came from and why he has the abilities he possesses.
When I started reading this book, I wondered how much I would really like this book and if it intrigued me enough. Superhighway was a fast-paced read and highly addictive. I could not put it down. I just had to keep reading. The plot of the book sucked me in and I kept going. As it seemed to be professionally edited, there were no errors hence the flow was uninterrupted. I rate this book at 4 out of 4 stars.
I love all things science fiction and this book is no exception. I found myself sympathizing with the character when he was in tight spots and berating him when he screwed up. Alex acts like a typical teenager: impulsive, spur-of-the-moment and without any thought for the consequences of his actions. Hence, sometimes, he made really bad decisions. On the other hand, some of his choices were really good. It is almost as if his good choices balanced off those bad ones he had made. I think this might be the first time I can honestly say there isn't anything I didn't like about a book.
I highly recommend this book to all science fiction and technology lovers out there. It is definitely a worthy read. Trust me, you will not be disappointed. It is a lengthy read so be sure you have the time to do so because once you start you might not want to put it down. This book is not for people who scoff at technology or science fiction. It is not for those people who detest long books either. If you prefer shorter novels with a lighter plot, then do not choose this book to read. I, for one, will be checking out the rest of this series. I doubt I will regret it.
