Thanks for the review, but I really don't like tales of small-town life or coming-of-age stories, especially if mental illness is involved, so this one's a strong 'no' for me. The numerous grammatical errors don't help, either; I have more than enough of those in books I read to review, already.

Your description of this book really hit home for me. When you talk about Les's group of friends being impacted by the addiction of one person, that made me want to read this book. Mental illness and addictions can destroy communities, so I'm interested to read more about how this book deals with these issues.

A sprinkling of grammatical and spelling errors generally won't stop me from enjoying a book, but a large quantity could be a definite issue. A 'current day' story dealing with small-town life, addiction and mental issues with does not sound like a book I would enjoy, but the review provides good information to help make that decision.

It is fictionized story about the people living in small town & I think the story is about the life of real people, that is good concept.

Don did a good job sharing his meaningful experiences in growing up days in Sheldon in the 50s & 60s. He shared lots of pain and heart ache that we all experience in a very real and meaningful way. Almost anyone can relate to these experiences, but in different ways...

I only read a small chapter and noticed the grammer errors. I thought this novel would be about farming due to the cover. I think I'll have to give this one a try.

Great review. It seems like this is a story anyone can relate to. Mental illness and drug addiction affect so many people in so many ways. I am excited to read this book to see what and how these people deal with their situation.

Very interesting review!
I like that the book is set in a small town and I wonder if that change something about the way they deal with addiction and mental illness.
Sounds like you enjoyed it, that´s great!

Coming of age and fictionalised/autobiographical stories have the distinct power of touching the reader's emotions due to their resemblance to real life. This power is amplified when it deals with difficult topics like mental illness, drugs, alcohol, and death. I’m glad that not only that the author takes on these difficult topics, but also on the various ways addicts and their loved ones can seek help.

This looks like an interesting book. I enjoyed the mannerisms and thoughts of Les, the main character of the story. Being from Iowa, the characterization of the state and Sheldon in particular intrigues me.

Sounds like a good book. It might be nice to read about family and friends that are loyal to each other no matter what. That's what real friends do.My sister suffered from a mental illness so I might read it. Thank you.

The realism of this book appeals to me. It's unfortunate that it needs more editing but the fact that you found it worth reading anyway is a very good endorsement. I like your review very much! Thank you for being so thorough!

Very well put. From this review I can tell the story was true to itself and with the finishing editorial touches it needs it would be a masterpiece. Love the fact that good characterisation was mentioned. Have no doubt it's a good story.

This book seems to have a lot of potential. I really like that Devries touches on mental health issues and addiction. I also like how he explores the topics of friendship and relationship. He allows his characters to mature and develop as the story goes along. I think well-developed characters are the mark of a successful writer. Great job on your review!
