Why We Quote is an asset. Ruth Finnegan, explores the use of citations, particularly as it relates to literary studies, anthropology, and folklore. This book is a must read. As it will greatly improve your English writing skills.

I'm not interested on subject matter books unless I have a need to it as a reference. I thank you for your review, but honestly, this isn't my cup of tea.

Your review is very thorough and does a good job of pointing out the pros and the cons of this book. The educational background of the author is apparent in her writing style. I agree it would make a great textbook and would be of interest to anyone that likes quotes. The present day usage of quotes and their history is fully described, and different quotations are sprinkled throughout the text which helps to hold the interest of the reader. Thanks and congrats to Ruth Finnegan on the BOTD!

Insightful and eloquent review. However, I still feel it's boring to read a book about quotation, except for school or other educational purposes. It will be useful if the grammatical errors are fixed.

I think it is a book for students of Letters and for those who are interesting in this subject.

My first thought was that it would be a fun read, and was I ever wrong. I'm actually glad that I wasn't the only one who thought it had the feeling of a textbook.

It's nice that it was full of information, but I don't think it's one that I would enjoy. Thank you for your insightful review. 💕

Thank you for your honest and insightful review. I find it ironic that an academic book almost too complicated for the “lay person,” should be filled with grammatical errors, and find this grounds to dock it a star as well. Still, I love the idea of writing about quotes. Personally, I love quoting and I think it’s cool someone chose to write about this topic.

Why Do We Quote? by Ruth Finnegan is a well-researched #NonFiction book that compiles everything about #Quotes. It sheds new light on ideas such as ‘allusion’, ‘authorship’, ‘imitation’, ‘originality’ and ‘plagiarism’.

So sorry to hear about the complexity and the few errors, but I congratulate you for sharing a great review.

Never put such question to myself, because I am not in the tiniest bit interested in the answer. Will have to pass this one.

Thank you for your review. I'm surprised to read that an educational book has such grammar issues. Sounds like it could use another round of editing. Although I think this would be helpful in some aspects of my life, right now I think I may have to pass on it. I will look into it later on down the road, to see if I have changed my mind. :techie-reference:

This is a very interesting topic to write about. I, too, never knew that quotes were such a big subject. This book certainly seems like a very educational read. I've always enjoyed reading quotes and using them in my own work. It would be great to learn more about their origin and usage in different aspects. I can see how the complexity may turn some people away from fully reading it though.

This book appears to contain a great deal of information on quotes and quoting. For me it's just not a subject I want to go into any real depth on.

I guess this is one book I get to pass. It sounds to sophisticated to a layperson like me. But I know someone else will have a blast with it. Your review is so insightful and informative. Good job.

I read the introductory part of the book. I found that it is interesting to read as it discusses things we 've seen yet have constantly used for long.

I must confess that not many people below the postgraduate level would find it important to ask the "whys", what ifs, and how", just to name a few.

As for grammar issues, I would point out the need for an editor to go through the work and Ruth Finnegan considers a reprinted version of the same.

I'm always amazed when someone writes about something I take for granted. I love quotes and as the author says, they're everywhere, but I never thought there was so much to the art and science of quoting. It's a shame that this isn't more readable for non-specialists, though. Great review!
