The Marriage Plot

Post by Jssherr »

I am reading The Marriage Plot by Eugenides. IT's a strange book and I'm plodding through. The characters are not very engaging and it feels like he could have used a better editor. Anyone have any opinions?

Don't you just hate bad editing! Have not read Jeffrey Eugenides latest book. It has been compared with Booker winner The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes but would you agree?

I do remember reading Eugenides' The Virgin Suicides before it was made into a movie with Kathleen Turner.
I enjoyed the humour, however the rest is a blur so it wasn't very memorable for me.

I haven't read The Sense of an Ending yet but I loved Middlesex by Eugenides which won the Pulitzer. I skipped parts of The Marriage Plot and didn't miss a thing. It's a disarming story but very long-winded (bad editing)...Am 9o% done...thank heavens...It's on top of the best seller list in the US. The best character was a very dysfunctional young man...at least he livened things up!!!

I've read very conflicting reviews of The Marriage Plot but based on Eugenides previous books I will probably read it .... maybe I'll hold it over for the Xmas holidays
