We will never know who, what, or how the universe was created. All we have are beliefs of a higher power, a scientific improbability, or acceptance that we will never know. These differences of beliefs have led to a divide amongst our current population, as they have since the beginning of humanity. Each group has their own sets of beliefs, values, traditions, and language. It seems too strange that a concept as simple as “how are we here” has caused such a divide amongst the world.

In Michel Bruneau’s novel My Author Is Dead, the characters live in a satirically divided world based on a belief in an Author and what the Author’s intentions are. Adam Chad Kilroy, an Authorian, is the main character and narrator of the book; he is a teenage boy with a love for June, a Kafkaist. The entire plot line of the book is based around Adam wanting to profess his love for June, failing miserably, and almost getting himself killed or worse…married to the town’s snotty snitch Cassandra.

My favorite part of this novel was learning about the world as it existed and the broken fourth wall. The book described the politics and cultures of the world. It was amazing to see how well Bruneau brought the world to life. The three main groups in the book were excellent to read about; I loved seeing the differences in their cultures and how they all viewed each other. I would love to have the novel remade with the main character being from each of the three main groups just to see how they would handle the climax of the novel.

As a part-time writer and a full-time reader, this book was perfectly crafted to show the creative process of writing and how without reading the world would fall into the hands of downright morons. Bruneau even shared a bit of his creative process with the reader by adding in a few deleted scenes to the novel at the end. They showed how he had originally developed Adam as a character and briefly explained why he did not use the ideas. I have always wanted to read deleted scenes, they are one of the few perks movies have over books. I would love to see more authors include them in their writings.

I rate My Author Is Dead 4 out of 4 stars. This book was a phenomenal read with unexpected twists and turns throughout. There were no slow parts to this novel and it all flowed together well. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a dystopian alternative reality story who doesn’t mind adult language and themes. While we may never agree on how the universe came to be, I think we can all agree that this is a fantastic novel to read.

My belief is that there has to be a master of the arts, science, and technology who created this world. He is the Almighty Creator of all the universes. Thank you for your insightful review.

His village forced him to as punishment. Neither him nor Cassandra wanted to though.

I love the breaking of the fourth wall , satirical, and meta vibes this book offers. We probably will never know our true origins but its certainly fun to wonder.

This book sounds really deep. I'm intrigued but I don't have much patience for a bunch of mumbo jumbo and not much story. Sounds like this one delivers on the deep thoughts and keeps the book moving. Thanks for the great review!
