These two statements are attributes I've noticed about the author's writing style as well, and I do find it offensive at times. I think, personally, I'm inclined to agree with most of your review based on the excerpt. It seems like a fairly safe story as far as thrillers go, so it might be a better read for someone that isn't up to gorier details, or just wants a general "whodunnit".
