Chasing The Red Queen by Karen Glista is a paranormal story that is packed with action, mystery and romance. Taking on a completely new and different take on the original vampire myths, Glista manages to weave an intricate tale that even the most hardcore vampire fans will not be able to put down.

Donja Bellanger is still suffering through the untimely death of her father when her mother suddenly remarries and her entire world is upended as she moves to a new town. She starts to warm up to her stepsister Makayla, who she was previously at odds with, and is lured into the glamorous world of clubs and riches where she crosses paths with Torin Mancini. Torin and Donja are mysteriously drawn to each other but that's not all. A cold-blooded predator has set his sights on Donja and is not willing to let go.

I loved the author's interesting twist on vampire mythology and how she focused on a new race called Iridescents. It brings a fresh insight and more detail to the story leaving me hungry for more. The characters are very well developed which made their struggles and triumphs all the easier to relate to. I like how Donja's struggles as a teenage girl are portrayed as very realistic and also enjoyed the numerous moments of bonding between Donja and Makayla. The prose was quite descriptive and flowed seamlessly which enabled me to visualize all the scenes unfolding right before my very eyes.

The first part of the book was very slow and the author dragged through the initial character introductions and relationships for quite a long time. There was quite a bit of unnecessary information that the plot could have easily done without. Furthermore, I wasn't fond of the relationship between Donja and Torin. The age difference of Donja as a teenager and Torin as an older immortal made me quite uncomfortable along with the rushed nature of their relationship which didn't seem realistic at all to me. I also found quite a few grammatical errors in punctuation and sentence structure which made a few parts of the novel a little awkward to read.

There are sexually graphic scenes, nudity, cursing and violence so I wouldn't recommend this book to younger readers or any reader who finds the above topics uncomfortable to read.

To conclude, I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars mainly due to the grammatical inconsistencies and slow beginning. I quite enjoyed the unfolding of the plot along with the mystery and would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance and paranormal books.

Vampire themed plots have never intrigued me and after reading the negatives, I will have to pass. Nonetheless, thank you for the honest review.

This seems to be a fascinating fiction. I have never tried my hand on vampire mythology but this story seems captivating so I will definitely read it.
