First Lessons by Linda J. Potter is an intense page-turner set in the genre of historical fiction. This is the first book of eleven in its series. It revolves around the character of Aliya. A medical school graduate who is involved in a car crash with her parents. After the car wreck, she wakes up in a completely different person's body, in a completely different place, at a completely different time in history. Aliya wakes up as Countess Lillian Earton, who not only has to adjust to this unfamiliar world she also has to take care of the failing land and turn it around into something profitable.

Aliya (Lillian) as a character is a very strong one. Almost too strong. Aliya woke up in this new body and did not question it much. She did a quick assessment of her situation and got straight to work fixing everything she thought that needed to be fixed. Aliya brought a lot of technological advances to this world. As much as I appreciate a strong female protagonist, she was almost too good of a strong lead in my opinion. She did not seem to struggle much in her new position. Although that did not stop me from reading it at all.

Another slight downside was the fact that this is the first book in its series. So it did a lot of setting up for the rest of the series. I was half expecting to get to see a lot more conflicts with Lily and the other royals in this book. I am excited to keep reading more though, and get a lot of questions answered.

I found that the plot flowed really nicely. There were a lot of other characters (The rest of the Earton family) but I was able to distinguish between the characters and scene switches easily. An incredible amount of detail was put into this book. Between the vast royal bloodline present or the culture and religion of the time. It was all laid out and explained really nicely. This story, so far, makes you really think about everything that goes into running a successful empire.

For me, I would give this story 4 out of 4 stars. The few negative aspects I found I could get over really easily and still was able to thoroughly enjoy the book. This book would be perfect for anybody who enjoys historical fiction. There are a few sexually suggested scenes throughout the book. A big theme of this book is dowry, marriage, and infidelity.

I would recommend this book to young adults or older. There is no fowl language used but with some of the sexual scenes and talks of miscarriage reader discretion could be advised.
