As an adult, I think how the book progressed was a bit slow. But ,I also believe if this was used for a slower paced read for children more confident with chapter books, each book was actually pretty good paced.
However, that said, I normally have Audible books on 1.25x reading speed at least, I had to put this book on 2 4x - 2.7x speed the entire time due to the pace the narrator used. Curious to hear what others think.

I think it progressed just fine. I think you should have repeated the kids' ages at different intervals in the story, like when you would progress them through the story, because their schools are different than those in other countries. I think younger children would get confused as to how old they are at different points of the book. I am going to read this book to my 7-year-old granddaughter because she is above her grade level and very advanced for her age, she will be wanting me to show her where Africa is on the map and will have empathy for the orphans.
:eusa-think: Teach a child to read, and they can go anywhere and be anything within the pages of a book.

I agree, including their ages after time jumps, even the smallest ones, would have helped the reader better understand where the characters were at in their lives.
