Listening to Miles Davis and Gil Evans on a January Night by Greg Stidham is a book of poems that encompasses a myriad of the author’s thoughts and observations. The poems in this book cover a range of topics, from grief to animals to the weather.

I am typically not one to read poetry, but I was extremely delighted to read this book! I found each poem to be unique, and they contained a certain depth that elicited a wistful feeling from the reader. I am particularly fond of the author’s writing style, as each poem felt very intimate and personal. The author covered a vast variety of topics, and I particularly enjoyed the fact that many of the author’s observations of these topics were relatable! There were discussions about animals and their antics as well as the grief felt by losing loved ones, and the way that the author discussed these topics felt very raw. Those that were not relatable due to age and life experiences were understandable at the very least, and this made the book all the more enjoyable to read. I got quite a few laughs from reading each poem, and there were even a few that made me shed a tear! I quite enjoyed reading the poems “Cardinal” and “Raindrops.” I truly felt like I knew the author on a very personal level after reading this book!

Overall, I would rate this book 4 out of 5, with points deducted due to the fact that there were some editing mistakes that were overlooked, such as poems in different fonts. There was nothing that I disliked about this book. There was no profanity and no sexual content. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good set of relatable poems that cover all of the important topics of life!
