Thanks kandscreeley for a well-thought out and convincing review of the book that is categorical in your endorsement. The review tells us what makes the book "compelling" and "brilliant" indeed. Beyond talking about the contents of the book, you expressed what you felt reading the chapters. For those not into drama about people going through and recovering from trauma, this review would make them give Model Marine a look.
Just looking at the Amazon summary of the book, Molly Monroe's character is important and definitely has a story tell. In other books, we wait for the character to transform. Model Marine opens with a main character who has already made a profound change in her life -- that of leaving her safe, beauty-queen life to become a soldier in the Marine Corps as a Combat Camera Marine. That is a story in itself apart from the one Molly tells from the first few pages as she recuperates in a hospital and struggles to reconstruct her memory of her immediate past.
Having read the first few pages myself, I can understand why Sondra Sykes Meek is getting the accolades and support as a writer. The challenge of writing emotional stuff in literature is to convey the power of those emotions in a prose that is eloquent and clear. The sentences should be touching but not syrupy, maudlin or overboard. They can be simply constructed but not pedantic or cliched. She meets these challenges head-on and comes away with a powerful story about recovery and revival.
