I like how you said that the slang and acronyms associated with the marines were not difficult to be understood by a civilian. I often get lost and bored when books tend to forget that their audience may not comprehend the story no matter what, I'm glad that this is not the case in this book. I also liked how you said that it is entertaining enough for everyone. Definitely will be checking out this book!

I like Molly's courage and perseverance in chasing her dreams. To be a military in the marine is not an easy task, but she still wanted it because that is where she is happy and comfortable.

Thanks for an amazing review :) it was a pleasure to read it. I'm not usually a fan of military/war books, but your review and obvious enjoyment of the book has me wondering what I'm missing out on, so this one is going on my 'to read' shelf. Plus, who can say no to a 'back-and-forth in time' book that's been written well :D

I sampled the book on Amazon. This seems a quite interesting story where the protagonist, a female character gets into marine services instead of pursuing her ongoing interest in the art field. The bold step taken by Molly Monroe sets the plot for the story and hopefully will be an intriguing read in the literature and fiction genre. Cheers :) :)

I really want to know what made Molly choose to join the Marines after living such a different life till that point. Come to think of it, that is probably why she made the switch, to live a different life.

When a reviewer describes a book like Model Marine as a spellbinding read, you know you are in for a treat. I am intrigued of knowing the situations and moments that this marine capture in her camera and publications since I believe this is one of the most important and dangerous roles in any mission. Congrats.

I quite enjoy this style of storytelling - where you jump backwards and forwards in time piecing the story together. I look forward to reading!

I would say Sondra Sykes Meek really put up a very compelling novel about a young woman who gives up the bright lights of modeling and pageants to join the Marine Corps. You know it is not easily given up what you really love doing for an adventurous kind of military life where you do not know what is gonna come out of it. This is engrossing, Model Marine is a book I'm excited

Finally, a protagonist in the very real world of military combat, the Marine Corps no less. There are already many women in military service, but their stories are rarely told. It's great that Sondra Sykes Meek depicts this in Model Marine. The determination of Molly Monroe to become a soldier despite the dangers and fears of her family; to carve her own path in life; to handle the risks; and to heal herself, is going to be an awesome story. Thanks OnlineBookClub.org for this BOTD!

Thanks kandscreeley for a well-thought out and convincing review of the book that is categorical in your endorsement. The review tells us what makes the book "compelling" and "brilliant" indeed. Beyond talking about the contents of the book, you expressed what you felt reading the chapters. For those not into drama about people going through and recovering from trauma, this review would make them give Model Marine a look.

Just looking at the Amazon summary of the book, Molly Monroe's character is important and definitely has a story tell. In other books, we wait for the character to transform. Model Marine opens with a main character who has already made a profound change in her life -- that of leaving her safe, beauty-queen life to become a soldier in the Marine Corps as a Combat Camera Marine. That is a story in itself apart from the one Molly tells from the first few pages as she recuperates in a hospital and struggles to reconstruct her memory of her immediate past.

Having read the first few pages myself, I can understand why Sondra Sykes Meek is getting the accolades and support as a writer. The challenge of writing emotional stuff in literature is to convey the power of those emotions in a prose that is eloquent and clear. The sentences should be touching but not syrupy, maudlin or overboard. They can be simply constructed but not pedantic or cliched. She meets these challenges head-on and comes away with a powerful story about recovery and revival.

This book sounds interesting. The plot seems intriguing, and the Molly character also seems like a fun protagonist. It's great that it's a story about a woman in the military as those stories are pretty rare. Also it's awesome to see this woman accomplishing her goal. Thanks for your review.
