I also think that Pellucid used the eyes to keep track of Will and maybe it also gives credence to the story itself, as a way to prove that Pellucid realy knows what she is talking about even when she was not there herself.

Are you saying that she told the story of Will because she'd placed the eyes to see his entire adventure? I find that had to believe and it would raise questions to parts of Will's journey if all we have to go on is Pellucid the Librarian and her spying eyes.

That's an interesting perspective! I just remember the scene after will and peter steal the map book that pellucid says she saw everything through her eyes!
Despite the creepy nature of that statement, Pellucid was ready for such an intrusive adventure and used the eyes effectively to be appraised of Will's progress.
I think so too, because how else could you write such a thorough story about his adventures if you wernt always watching lol.

I kind of viewed them as creepy security cameras lol
For me, it was a magical security system which was amazingly creative in its simplicity.
It was kind if both it was magical in that it took magic and .mystery to make them work, but i just imagine these creepy eyes popping open and staring at you out of nowhere....eesh

That seems like a reasonable assumption. I didn't think to ask why the author used the eyes. We spend so much time being viewed by cameras, cell phones, etc. that they seemed like just another surveillance procedure, albeit a fanciful, and creepy, one.
I just love how we can all read the same words but draw different conclusions!

I do think they were a creepy version of a security camera, but I think it's also how pellucid was able to be "omniscient" to write wills story
Being overly keen and observant was Pellucid's character and she must have invented the eyes to watch over the orphanage and library. Will was a lucky coincidence, and writing his story became her new mission.
See I had the feeling Pellucid knew exactly who Will was from the beginning, so she kept tabs on him because she knew he would have a story to tell

Perhaps the Leader of the Fortune Tellers? I mean, those magnificent creepy crystal ball eyes see a lot... perhaps Pellucid can see through his eyes as well, to watch Will? Just like the rest of the crystal balls. A wild assumption.
I like it though! I wonder if they are just in the orphanage or if they are used everywhere in echoland?
I would not be overly surprised to learn that they are used everywhere in Echoland especially the Palace.
I would be curious to see if they show up and are used in different ways in a future novel

I can't explain the mystery of the eyes, but I don't think their purpose was to monitor or track Will and Peter.
If not for that, what do you think their purpose was?
Maybe they were used to keep track of everything in the Orphanage and the Library, but chanced upon Will's activities....maybe.
Maybe! I just had the feeling they were purposefully spying on him since the very beginning :evil2:

LV2R wrote: 21 Sep 2019, 22:06 That is a good question to ponder. Who exactly had access to all of the "eyes"? I thought since Will said that the orphanage was like a prison that they were monitored. It seems that Will and Peter were always sneaking around.
Who do you speculate? That's an interesting way to view the orphanage - as a prison - since it is supposed to be a "sanctuary" lol kind of changes the whole vibe of the place!

Since Willand Peter were sneaking around so much it stands to reason why the eyes would keep a closer watch on them

Perhaps their purpose was just to add mystery to the tale. One can't know everything in there. But I think there may be a sequel. I'm still reading the book, though.
We cant know everything, but it is fun to speculate!

Sort of a unique way to create and give credit to an omniscient character!

If it is Pellucid, it makes sense to play on the name of the character in the book and the author, as the author would have eyes to see everything.

But the eyes preceded Will's journey. They could have been their for anyone, but lucked out on Will.

I don't think that is accurate. I think Will came to Pellucid's intrest when the rumour that he was the Prince's echo started circulating.

I would like to see other places in Echoland where the eyes are used.
