I completely agree. It's definitely much more acceptable now than in the 20th century. People are now more tolerant and understanding about biracial marriages. Kalayla's issues stem more out of her socio economic background than anything elseStephanie Elizabeth wrote: ↑01 Sep 2020, 05:55Of course it is acceptable; I think it is quite commonplace in our world today. What's your viewpoint on interracial marriages, especially in the present day? Do you think it's acceptable? Could it have contributed to the painful experiences that Kalayla goes through?

Interracial marriages, with it's acceptance, still face averse reactions from some families. It's more of an individual thing now.
As for Kalayla, being biracial is enough to have contributed to her sufferings because, with acceptance these people still face opposition. They are neither here nor there and are subsequently, not given a sense of belonging.

Certainly, relationships are more diverse than they have been. But you need to remember that it wasn't that very long ago where in some communities one could be imprisoned for dating, let alone marrying, a person of color. By 2045, the white population within the USA will for the first time be eclipsed by those who are not white. A good portion of these individuals will be children from blended parents. My prayer is that by then, if not much sooner, no one will care about the color of one's skin, but simply recognize the value of one's humanity.
Parenting is the most fulfilling job, but it obviously comes with its challenges. It helps a child build their optimism and confidently change their social behaviors positively. Children also gain strong problem-solving skills when they have a positive relationship with their parents. Kalayla and Lena's son had a problem when growing up. Their parents were not thorough in terms of moral uprightness, consequences, punishment, and correction. It is the main reason why they all struggled with emotional development and content relationships with others in their life.Zee_Zee wrote: ↑17 Sep 2020, 08:52 Interracial marriages are acceptable in this current time unlike history. But biracial children still suffer from not being accepted.

One of the benefits of interracial marriage is learning a new culture. Marrying a spouse from a different race opens your mind to accepting people from other races, not because of their color, but because of their personality. If interracial marriages are encouraged, then there would be more interpersonal relationships everywhere. For instance, in places where such marriages are unacceptable, it's stressful to try and fit in. You can see that after getting married to Jamal, Maureen was too afraid to make new friends because she didn't know how they'd react when they found out her husband was black.

As far as Kalayla's hardships go, she would have faced racism if both her parents were black. The reason for her hardships and probably the reason she had to act like a grown-up was because of their financial conditions and Maureen's shortcomings to act as a parent. Since Maureen was weak, Kalayla had to be strong.

That being said, interracial marriage is socially acceptable but depends largely on family acceptance. The spouse's family view and acceptance of Kalayla could have added significantly to her struggles.
