Review of We Survived
This is an exciting novel about the actions of Islamic extremists and individuals who hate America. Reza Jafari, whose family was killed in Iran because of their Islamic extremist values, links up with Juan, who lost his entire family to a massacre by the CIA. Together, Reza and Juan decide to destroy America’s economy because of their experiences with America. The duo made plans to produce anthrax to carry out several terrorist attacks in stores and warehouses across the USA.
After these attacks, the spores from the anthrax spread, and many deaths were recorded. These deaths spark a nationwide manhunt for the terrorists responsible for these deaths. Every security agency and personnel in the country is involved in this search, including Dale, Walmart's head of security; Alex, Walmart's head of legal department; and Sarah, who's married to Dale and works for the FBI. Does life ever return to normal for Americans after these attacks? Are Reza and Juan ever caught?
We Survived was a fantastic read. I enjoyed how the author, C. Ross Dutton, created a detailed story about America's survival efforts following a large-scale terrorist attack. The author's depictions took into account modern-day America and its economy, the efforts by the terrorists to destabilize the economy, and America's efforts to bring them to justice. In simple terms, this was a tale of diligence, betrayal, terrorism, love, and patriotism.
What I liked most about this book was how Dutton gave us a backstory about the lives of the major characters, especially Reza and Juan. It helped me make better sense of these characters' decisions throughout the story. I also liked how Dutton gave in-depth descriptions of the actions that took place in the book. A few good examples of this include how Juan constantly evaded capture and the details of anthrax production.
As good as the descriptions were in this story, I feel like there were some minor holes in the plot. For instance, I couldn't understand how Juan knew that Sarah was on his trail. I also wasn't satisfied with how the author summarized some portions of the story that I considered essential; this dampened the plot's suspense a little bit. Still, these are just minor bumps in a good story.
This story was exceptionally edited; I found no grammatical errors while reading. I rate it 3 out of 4 stars because of the plot holes and slightly under-utilized suspense. I recommend it to people who love a good investigative story with elements of war, terrorism, and patriotism.
