As a lawyer, I query whether being informed of the murder by the person who committed it makes the recipient of the news an accessory - I would think that to be an accessory a person should be with knowledge of the intent to commit murder - otherwise the whole world hearing of a committed murder, say, on the BBC, would become an accessory. Admittedly though, I am not a U.S.A. attorney and I do not specialise in criminal offences, but the author may want to confirm it with one who is, or, to play safe, either mention it less assertively like she was worried about being an accessory (without knowing if it was indeed so) or replace it with something lighter, like "getting involved".
