Re: Naming your children
Rowan is another name for the mountain ash - it's a very common tree around my area of Ireland and is regarded in Celtic mythology as a fairy tree. I love trees and the Rowan is one of my absolute favourites.Totoro wrote:While not my favorite character, there was no way I could convince my husband of Killashandra or Menolly. I was able to get a 3rd choice, especially since I knew someone in college with the name. We chose Rowan, who is both a character in Anne McCaffrey's books and Anne Rice (though I did not remember than until after she was born). We thought it was a great original name. Unbelievably, there is another Rowan in the same grade, two that are two years younger, and two more at my son's school. They are a mix of girls and boys too!

We also loved that it was a name for a tree. As we live on the West Coast of the USA, it is not something that grows here. But this spring we found a nursery that could send us seedlings. She now has about 20 seedlings in her Rowan forest.

I love the idea of it, quite frankly, but always feel compelled to run the other way. I just think that some names are completely out of context for today's world. Having a name like "Khaleesi" is awesome if you live in the world of Game of Thrones, but in suburban America...eh, not so much.
Hermione is a good name... more appropriate-- but super common..
I guess I'll just have continue to use my cool character names for my alts in World of Warcraft
