When you purchase a Kindle book (or get it for free), check to see if WhisperSync is available as well. The accompanying audible book can be purchased for as little as $2.99. (I've gotten a few audible books to accompany free Kindle books and only paid 2 or 3 dollars.)
They are synched together so you can read the book then listen in your car (or wherever) then go back to reading. I really enjoy being able to read a book and then listen to it when I can't read.

Oh absolutely and they are so much better than the "computer voice" that reads to you on the Kindle. You should definitely check it out!kaylahar6 wrote:With most of my books, I have let the kindle read to me. I didn't know that there was audible versions of books.
You can sign up for Audible for a month and get a book to try for free.
You can also sometimes borrow them from your local library if you have a library card and your library participates in that type of program.

How do you get hooked up with it? Is WhisperSync (sp?) the same as Audible? I guess I will have to look more into this...sure would be handy for reading while driving.

If your library participates, it would be available online through there. That is totally separate from Amazon, Audible or WhisperSnyc. I borrow audiobooks (and ebooks too) from my local library for 2 weeks using my library card.sarah92480 wrote:I was wondering about this...I have only used the book reader that comes with the Kindle and it is really hard to get immersed in the book because I am trying to understand what the computer voice is saying!!

WhisperSync is an Amazon thing. You buy the ebook and audiobook together and it automatically syncs when you read/listen.
If the audiobook is available when you buy an ebook, you will see the WhisperSync notification that the audiobook is also available at a special price - you need to go through WhisperSync to get the special audiobook price.
I've gotten some free ebooks and the accompanying audiobooks for $2 or $3.
I tried listening to the Kindle "voice" but just had to turn it off. It was just awful!
And, yes, it is great to listen while you drive or do something else and then sit down and read where you left off. I really like that.

I will have to look into that. You are right, the Kindle voice is terrible, and it's really hard to get a sense of ....well, anything when listening to it. Haha!bobbirich wrote:

It would be really handy for driving, but also when I'm crafting stuff too. For Christmas this year I did a lot of crocheting and it would have been nice to listen to books while doing it!
Thanks for the info, I will check it out!

You really should check it out if you do crafting (especially crocheting). I crochet a lot too and usually listen to a book. Then I can pick up where I left off and read. It's great for that!
Hope you like it too

I know what you mean, makes you wonder how they got a job reading books, huh? But some are just wonderful and I've really enjoyed listening.Bfrisco wrote:I've really enjoyed listening to a few free audiobooks through Audible, but I guess I'm a bit picky about voices, which is a shame, since some of them are really great books!
I do a lot of crocheting and listen to audiobooks so I guess I just kinda blocked out the voices 'cause I got interested in the stories.
Anything is better than the Kindle computer voice though!

That is FOR SURE!! I get so distracted by the choppy reading it does and mispronunciations of words or numbers. I end up paying attention more to trying to figure out what he's saying than the actual story.bobbirich wrote:

Yes, reading is good!
But if you can't read, want (or need) to do something kind of boring or have a long drive it is nice to be able to listen to a story.

Just can't do the computer voice!!
I was hoping they would improve it with the Fire, but oh well. We can only hope for something better at some time!
