Error report guidelines

Some grammar rules (and embarrassing mistakes!) transcend the uniqueness of different regions and style guides. This new International Grammar section by OnlineBookClub.org ultimately identifies those rules thus providing a simple, flexible rule-set, respecting the differences between regions and style guides. You can feel free to ask general questions about spelling and grammar. You can also provide example sentences for other members to proofread and inform you of any grammar mistakes.

Re: Error report guidelines

Hi! I have no idea where else to post this. I have a question I was hoping someone could help me with. When a review is returned back and is corrected, does it receive a second editor's scorecard? If so, are both editor scorecards on the same book weighed evenly?

Thank you to anyone who can help me. I'm relatively new to this website and am still learning the intricacies of how the reviewing/scoring system works.

Whenever I had a review returned to be corrected, I always got a new scorecard, and both of the scores were listed on my history. They were not combined. However, it has been a couple of years since I had to correct any reviews, so they might have changed it.

Hi,

I am noting errors as part of a review. The sentence where the error occurs is two pages long-- am I really required to quote the entire thing? It'll take me a few minutes to type out.

I have had this problem in the past and got by with just quoting the part of the sentence that had the independent clause where the error occurred. I would refrain from using an eclipse as that would indicate that you left out some of the sentence.

Thank you so much! I hope I am not docked points for just quoting the part of the sentence with the error, but I'll explain why I didn't quote the full sentence.

Thank you Alys. Your answer should be pinned! It would help a lot of newbies to know how it works from the editor perspective- especially that only 4 errors are marked. I thought the lack of listing an error from another scorecard meant a discrepancy; now I know how it comes back that way.

Erin Suttle wrote: 10 Jun 2024, 07:25 I had the same issue. Thankfully, on my 3rd attempt the reviewer explained the guidelines better. (I had read them, but misunderstood things) However, after fixing that issue, the last report said I didn't substantiate my 4/5 rating well enough. Shouldn't all errors be listed so I don't have to fix the review multiple times? Does the same person recheck fixed reviews or is it different people with different opinions? I'm new to this and trying to figure it out still! Thanks
Hello,
The good news is that once you make a mistake, you typically don't make the same mistake. The less good news is that sometimes this can take a while. Almost all of us (including yours truly) have had rejected reviews. Editors are only asked to list four errors. So, if there are a lot of errors, a person could end up, like you say, fixing the review many times. If you're asked to fix the errors, please don't assume that the only errors are the ones that are listed. Also, don't assume that the only guidelines that weren't followed were the ones listed by the editors. Each review is put into a queue. Then, an editor is randomly assigned one. This means that there is a good chance that different people are reading and editing your review.

I am curious how this turned out. I have a few very long sentences that I will have to write out to report an error.

So, I ended up having to quote the ENTIRE sentence, as there were 5 errors in the sentence. It was a list of people's names and descriptions of them. It took me a few minutes to type out everything, and I apologized to whoever had to read it all!

Mine is going to be very lengthy too! The author wrote paragraph long sentences, so reporting an error in it will be a lot of reading for the reviewer!
