Great review! "Almost Mortal" by Christopher Leibig is an engaging crime/mystery novel with a unique storytelling approach. The book effectively weaves together two narratives: Sam's investigation into the Rosslyn Ripper case and the journal entries of the suspected killer. Sam's character development was a highlight, making him relatable and well-rounded. Totally recommend to fans of crime and mystery.

The unexpected twist ending got me curious. I'm into mystery and crime. The author telling the story from two different perspectives/writing styles is quite interesting. Thanks for the content warning. This doesn't seem like it's for me. Great review!

I would love to find out who the Rosslyn Ripper is, considering he or she has been involved in three murders, and whether Sam was successful in his investigation. The book’s plot is very interesting.

Book Review – Almost Mortal by Christopher Leibig

Almost Mortal by Christopher Leibig is a fascinating blend of legal thriller, mystery, and supernatural fiction that challenges the reader to question the boundaries between faith, morality, and the hidden forces that shape human nature.

The story follows Sam Young, a skilled and unconventional criminal defense attorney practicing in Virginia. Sam is not just a sharp legal mind — he possesses an unusual ability to sense the thoughts and emotions of others, almost as if he has a heightened intuition or a supernatural gift. This talent, while never fully explained, becomes a central element in the story, setting Sam apart from other protagonists in typical legal thrillers.

The plot thickens when Father Andrada, a local Catholic priest, becomes indirectly involved in the investigation of a brutal serial killer known as the “Rosslyn Ripper.” Bound by the sacred seal of confession, Father Andrada cannot reveal what he knows — even if it could save lives. Desperate for help, a mysterious woman named Camille Paradisi approaches Sam with information that could unravel the case but also expose ancient secrets long buried by the Church.

As Sam digs deeper into the investigation, he uncovers not only clues about the identity of the serial killer but also shocking revelations about human origins, lost knowledge, and the existence of “Mortal Beings” — descendants of angels and humans. These supernatural undertones are handled with subtlety, never overpowering the realism of the courtroom drama but adding a chilling layer of intrigue.

One of the novel’s strongest aspects is the balance between legal realism and spiritual mystery. Leibig, himself a practicing attorney, crafts courtroom scenes with authenticity and precision. At the same time, the philosophical and religious questions raised in the story invite the reader to ponder the nature of good and evil, justice, and redemption.

Sam Young is a deeply human character — flawed, introspective, and haunted by his past. His journey is not only about solving a murder case but also about confronting his own beliefs, fears, and hidden potential. The supporting characters, including Camille and Father Andrada, are equally complex and compelling, each carrying their own secrets and inner struggles.

The writing style is sharp, intelligent, and atmospheric. Leibig builds suspense masterfully, using short chapters and cliffhangers that keep the reader engaged. The plot twists are unpredictable yet well-earned, leading to a powerful and thought-provoking conclusion.

Final Verdict:

Almost Mortal is not just a legal thriller — it is a story about hidden truths, forbidden knowledge, and the eternal struggle between light and darkness within the human soul. Christopher Leibig delivers a unique and captivating novel that will appeal to fans of legal dramas, supernatural mysteries, and philosophical fiction.

This book leaves the reader questioning: What if there is more to humanity than we have been told? And what price must be paid for uncovering the truth?

Highly recommended.

An unpredictable plot with the perspective of a detective and the criminal sounds fascinating. The reflective narration is enticing as well. Great review!

The reviewer writing style is is engaging.
The story with its flaw according to OBC'S review seems well-written. It is difficult to write a two storyline without confusing the reader and for that the author deserves a Praise. Congrats on BOTD.

This review offers a thoughtful and engaging breakdown of Almost Mortal, highlighting the dual narrative structure and contrasting writing styles. The reader’s insights into character development, especially Sam’s, add depth, while their balanced critique of suspense and plot payoff makes the review both honest and informative for potential readers.

Sam, an attorney, certainly has a task on his hands: to find out who Rosslyn Ripper is. Despite the lack of suspense, I am also interested in discovering who that psycho is. Thanks for the honest review.

I read the sample and I see what you mean by "two stories." I agree that "X's" story is more descriptive and compelling, while Sam's story is more dry. It could be that Leibig did it intentionally. I look forward to reading this book and discovering who "X" is. Thanks for the intriguing review!

It si an interesting BOTD because the author wrote about Samson "Sam" Young, a criminal defense lawyer in Bennet County, Virginia, is at the center of this crime/mystery tale. On occasion, Sam helped folks with legal issues while working off the books. Therefore, his decision to assist Father Andrada and Camille Paradisi, friends of his late mother, in the Rosslyn Ripper case was not difficult. congratulations!!!

This sounds intriguing! Now I'm really curious to know who the serial killer, Rosslyn Ripper, is. I also want to find out more about X and their reason for sending the journal pages. Altogether, this seems like an interesting book. Congrats on BOTD!

Sounds like a gripping mix of mystery and introspection. I like how it blends a crime investigation with deeper questions about faith and identity, it makes me curious to see how both stories connect in the end.
