Almost Mortal by Christopher Leibig is a fascinating blend of legal thriller, mystery, and supernatural fiction that challenges the reader to question the boundaries between faith, morality, and the hidden forces that shape human nature.
The story follows Sam Young, a skilled and unconventional criminal defense attorney practicing in Virginia. Sam is not just a sharp legal mind — he possesses an unusual ability to sense the thoughts and emotions of others, almost as if he has a heightened intuition or a supernatural gift. This talent, while never fully explained, becomes a central element in the story, setting Sam apart from other protagonists in typical legal thrillers.
The plot thickens when Father Andrada, a local Catholic priest, becomes indirectly involved in the investigation of a brutal serial killer known as the “Rosslyn Ripper.” Bound by the sacred seal of confession, Father Andrada cannot reveal what he knows — even if it could save lives. Desperate for help, a mysterious woman named Camille Paradisi approaches Sam with information that could unravel the case but also expose ancient secrets long buried by the Church.
As Sam digs deeper into the investigation, he uncovers not only clues about the identity of the serial killer but also shocking revelations about human origins, lost knowledge, and the existence of “Mortal Beings” — descendants of angels and humans. These supernatural undertones are handled with subtlety, never overpowering the realism of the courtroom drama but adding a chilling layer of intrigue.
One of the novel’s strongest aspects is the balance between legal realism and spiritual mystery. Leibig, himself a practicing attorney, crafts courtroom scenes with authenticity and precision. At the same time, the philosophical and religious questions raised in the story invite the reader to ponder the nature of good and evil, justice, and redemption.
Sam Young is a deeply human character — flawed, introspective, and haunted by his past. His journey is not only about solving a murder case but also about confronting his own beliefs, fears, and hidden potential. The supporting characters, including Camille and Father Andrada, are equally complex and compelling, each carrying their own secrets and inner struggles.
The writing style is sharp, intelligent, and atmospheric. Leibig builds suspense masterfully, using short chapters and cliffhangers that keep the reader engaged. The plot twists are unpredictable yet well-earned, leading to a powerful and thought-provoking conclusion.
⸻
Final Verdict:
Almost Mortal is not just a legal thriller — it is a story about hidden truths, forbidden knowledge, and the eternal struggle between light and darkness within the human soul. Christopher Leibig delivers a unique and captivating novel that will appeal to fans of legal dramas, supernatural mysteries, and philosophical fiction.
This book leaves the reader questioning: What if there is more to humanity than we have been told? And what price must be paid for uncovering the truth?
Highly recommended.

The story with its flaw according to OBC'S review seems well-written. It is difficult to write a two storyline without confusing the reader and for that the author deserves a Praise. Congrats on BOTD.
