Characters are really small parts of you and if you think about that long enough you will certainly question your sanity, quite rightly I might add.
However, it is easy to get stuck sometimes, when perhaps you do not know how to get from point a to point b,
In these situations, sometimes it is best to traverse to another part of the plot, authors often will do this, by moving sideways, into the plot.
Moving sideways can be a good way to bring the depth of what you want while giving the plot time to develop, you can think of it like you would if you were painting a wall, you put a coat of paint on the wall and then you have to wait until the paint dries.
While the paint is drying you might find another related task that you can do that will benefit the project over all and also keep the reader in the place where you want them, (interested).
So you see how I went sideways into the plot of this short post?
Hope this was helpful.

On one occasion, I started another book altogether and scrapped the original...funny old world.

There is so much about life to write about that getting frustrated over a single topic or story really isn't worth your time. Some time in the future you may hit upon an inspirational idea that helps you out a lot and enlightens you on your subject that you previously had not been able to envision correctly.
This is providing of course that it isn't absolutely necessary that you write on your topic within a short period of time.
