The Lovely Bones

So, I heard about this book and recalled my mother telling me one night "I have not read a book I loved in so long, I've almost given up bothering to look for anything anymore."

So, just as a "for no real reason" gift, I thought I might give her this book. The way I see it, if she doesn't like it, no loss because I got it for her.

She is in her late 50s, not into "shock and gore" movies or books. Likes a good story.

Should I do it?

There is a pretty shocking scene at the beginning that is fairly violent. I thought the book was fantastic, but it all depends on what your mom likes to read. I think this might have been a Book of the Month read on this forum so you might check that thread to see what people thought about it.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen and Street of a Thousand Blossoms by Gail Tsukiyama are both really good books that moms might love.

I'm absolutely certain my mother would not like it at all but she is a somewhat conservative woman and a good deal older than your mother! She very much favours a "nice romance with a happy ending" ... need I say more?

Do NOT get this book for her!! It is not the beginning I think she'll hate but the idiotic and weird ending. I would go more with The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

I think its a great book for your mother, lets face it they arent stupid and have seen a lot in life so a rape and murder scene for a page wont corrupt them forever. The book is an above average tale of the afterlife and the collapse of the family unit, post-murder. The movie is also quite good so she might want to see that when she is done with the book.

I had a lot of people who read the book tell me the movie was awful. That doesn't surprise me. So you didn't think the movie was bad? I can see going over there one night and watching it with them. They love it when I bring Chinese over for a movie night lol.

Movie was quite good, mostly due to the fantastic acting from irish actress Saoirse Ronan Also Stanley Gucci was creepy as the killer paedo, the only problem with the movie is that it cant decide whether it wants to be a fantasy drama or plain drama, there are too many CGI effects which interrupt the plot at key moments, would still recommend it though.

Think my mother would enjoy this but it isn't a light hearted read. Even at 30 I can imagine this would increase my mothers worrying about her (all adult) children somewhat!

She finished reading it not too long ago and the review from here was good. She wasn't "in love" with it or anything but she definitely liked it.
