It lowered the standards as far as the romance genre is concerned. Now, the market is flooded with books that think they can "one-up" this series. I see it a lot on social media.Bookaholic14 wrote:To each their own with reading preferences. This is definitely not one of the "great works of our time" - in my opinion. It is an Erotic book, with a definite BDSM theme. If that's not your cup of tea, then I wouldn't recommend reading any of the trilogy. I picked it up on the recommendation of a friend and found a new genre that I enjoyed reading. Do keep in mind that the dialogue is fairly simple and somewhat repetative. I went into the book with little knowledge of it and even less of what to expect, and I think my lack of expectations helped. The hype surrounding the book was, I think, more due to the nature of its content, rather than the quality of its content.
"Do you miss Christian Grey?" Read this!
"Here's the new Christian Grey!"
I liked the series, too and I understand it wasn't a "romance" as I know romance to be. I'm just sorry that now everybody thinks they can write this sort of thing. I've read more than my share of what is being termed, "erotica" and it's just one step beneath porn. There's little chemistry between the characters and the relationship is based solely upon how many different ways they can do the "wild thing". It got old quick.
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

You might enjoy the fourth novel, Grey. It's a lot longer than the others but it's told from Christian's point of view and gives more insight as to why he is like he is. You get a glimpse of his childhood.wolfspirit_1025 wrote:I read all 3 books and loved it. It talks about what some people like and feel like they have to hide because if they don't people will make them feel like they are doing something wrong. It isn't for younger people no but i think it is enlightening as to what all is out there and i happened to like alot of what was going on in the books.
I still think the real story revolves around Elena and how she got him involved with all of this. How did she get him to think this lifestyle was the way for him? That's where Grey was lacking. It was still a good book, though.

I'm in agreement. I only read the first book and half of the second. I felt as though they dragged on and were no where near as captivating as what I normally enjoy. Glad to know I'm not alone in the thought that the hype doesn't match the material!

Fifty Shades of Grey is a BDSM romance. To not give anything away, it's about a college student who meets a millionaire who is a dominant and eventually introduces the female student to the BDSM world.
Yes there is A LOT of sex scenes, but if you saw the movie, I would have to say the movie did not do the book justice. Also the movie only covers the first book.
I read the series at least three times, it was VERY well written in my opinion, sex portion aside, it was an awesome story overall.
