To each their own with reading preferences. This is definitely not one of the "great works of our time" - in my opinion. It is an Erotic book, with a definite BDSM theme. If that's not your cup of tea, then I wouldn't recommend reading any of the trilogy. I picked it up on the recommendation of a friend and found a new genre that I enjoyed reading. Do keep in mind that the dialogue is fairly simple and somewhat repetative. I went into the book with little knowledge of it and even less of what to expect, and I think my lack of expectations helped. The hype surrounding the book was, I think, more due to the nature of its content, rather than the quality of its content.

I have a love hate relationship with these books. Love the sex but everything else sucked. The girl was a bit of a dim wit and not very likeable and so was Grey. I didn't feel that there was a real connection between the characters just obsession.

It lowered the standards as far as the romance genre is concerned. Now, the market is flooded with books that think they can "one-up" this series. I see it a lot on social media.

"Do you miss Christian Grey?" Read this!
"Here's the new Christian Grey!"

I liked the series, too and I understand it wasn't a "romance" as I know romance to be. I'm just sorry that now everybody thinks they can write this sort of thing. I've read more than my share of what is being termed, "erotica" and it's just one step beneath porn. There's little chemistry between the characters and the relationship is based solely upon how many different ways they can do the "wild thing". It got old quick.

I read all 3 books and loved it. It talks about what some people like and feel like they have to hide because if they don't people will make them feel like they are doing something wrong. It isn't for younger people no but i think it is enlightening as to what all is out there and i happened to like alot of what was going on in the books.

You might enjoy the fourth novel, Grey. It's a lot longer than the others but it's told from Christian's point of view and gives more insight as to why he is like he is. You get a glimpse of his childhood.

I still think the real story revolves around Elena and how she got him involved with all of this. How did she get him to think this lifestyle was the way for him? That's where Grey was lacking. It was still a good book, though. :)

I read this to see what all the hype was when it first came out. For someone like myself who writes erotica and who is a fan of people like Laurell K. Hamilton, Anais Nin, A. N. Roquelaure, even Marthe Blau, this book falls so short I'm surprised its as popular as it is.

It's actually a really good book. It is loaded with sex and lust but I enjoyed it. I read all 3 books in about 2 days. To me it starts off a little slow but if you can get though the beginning it's worth the read. The last book is my favorite and I wish it wasn't a trilogy, I want it to be a series.

Some argue that there isn't a plot to the story and the book is just filled with sex, but there is an actual story to it and I thought it was pretty good

I have finally come back to the final book in this trilogy three years after I read the first two books. It just didn't hold my attention. The writing is simple and doesn't require one to think while reading which is something I enjoy when I have a lot going on at the time. Now I find myself about a third of the way through with the final book and I'm bored with it.

I've read the first two novels and have been working on the third. What I love about the books is they aren't just erotic novels they have a love story mixed in.

I'm in agreement. I only read the first book and half of the second. I felt as though they dragged on and were no where near as captivating as what I normally enjoy. Glad to know I'm not alone in the thought that the hype doesn't match the material!

Fifty Shades of Grey may seem complicated to some people. I had finished the 1st book of the series and I remember crying at some point while reading. It really moved my heart and since I put myself into the main character's shoes like how I always do in all the books I read, I have experienced pleasure, sadness, anger and pain. I always imagine how it will feel to be treated like how she is treated in the story. I started reading the 2nd book last year but I didn't finish it since I wanted to read other books as well.

With 50 shades I will be honest, it is a good book but I feel like it takes forever for anything good to happen. The beginning is very slow and then it picks up, which makes it worth it.

Hi All,

Fifty Shades of Grey is a BDSM romance. To not give anything away, it's about a college student who meets a millionaire who is a dominant and eventually introduces the female student to the BDSM world.

Yes there is A LOT of sex scenes, but if you saw the movie, I would have to say the movie did not do the book justice. Also the movie only covers the first book.

I read the series at least three times, it was VERY well written in my opinion, sex portion aside, it was an awesome story overall.

I agree. The first book was ehhhhhh. It did start of super slow and was difficult for me to get through even. And the movie, I think where they went wrong is in the casting. I mean, these two had no chemistry whatsoever. I saw it on Valentine's Day and it was uncomfortable watching some of their scenes together. I am reading the second one right now and if I've been reading it for about a year now, if that says anything.
